Custom lead mouthpiece made for me!
Hey, so I'm selling one of my own mouthpieces, one I played for many years and hope you'll enjoy reading about and perhaps be interested in purchasing it. I would like to see it go to a good home. This is a custom mouthpiece made for me when I was at Kanstul.
I had taken a few years off in the 90s, but prior to that my early experiences had been playing with winning programs in junior high and high school, followed by a few years playing in the Velvet Knights Drum & Bugle corps, the famous RCC Marching Tigers, the Tournament of Roses Herald Trumpets, and a stint with the Sea World Beach Band, just to mention a few early highlights. Took about a decade off to focus on family, and ended up in sales. After a great run in the wholesale nursery business, I started looking for something else. Just after 9/11 and about the time I was starting my "comeback" journey, I accepted a job with Zig Kanstul as his sales and marketing manager.
The iconic Kanstul factory in Anaheim was about 50k sq. ft, and employed about 60 staff and craftsmen building musical instruments for artists and ensembles at the highest levels of performance. I was fortunate enough to meet and work with the best players in the world! It was no small privilege to be able to talk trumpet with my peers and trumpet heroes. Kanstul was the pioneer in scanning and duplication of mouthpiece, and boasted a catalog of literally hundreds of mouthpieces. Using Renishaw reverse engineering technology and state-of-the-art CNC machinery, we became a destination for artists seeking highly custom mouthpieces. So at one point I finally decided to pull the trigger on a full custom mouthpiece for myself. If you had access to all those resources, you'd probably commission a full custom mouthpiece, wouldn't you?
Since my college days, I played Warburton mouthpieces, and so that was my starting point. Over time I worked my way into smaller mouthpieces because of the demands of the bands I was playing in at the time, and my efforts and experience paid off with this mouthpiece.
I chose a medium shallow “V” style cup, an exceptional high-velocity cup for piccolo trumpet and upper register work. Comfortable rim, a bit of extra room at the bottom of the shallow V cup. The rim is based on Warburton's "Anchor Grip" top, which works for players that desire a mouthpiece that seats more securely and allows the player to have improved tonguing performance. I wanted a more open backbore so I chose the Reeves 692. It's a bit darker than the 69, so it helped offset the brightness of my shallow cup and lightweight trumpets a bit. I used this mouthpiece with both a Kanstul Chicago MLP and the Kanstul 1600 "WB". It's marked with my initials.
0.620" Inner rim diameter (equivalent to Warburton 8)

    # 28 Throat
    Reeves 692 backbore*
*(from the Reeves website) Darker and broader tone than the 69 backbore but still with a well defined core. The 692 works great for strong players who don’t prefer the efficiency of smaller backbores and for players who have tighter horns.
The day it was finally silver plated, we had Harry Kim in the factory, so we tested it together. I have since played this mouthpiece onstage with Latin artist Juanes and recorded with rap en Español artists Cire and Don Abusivo. I am a regular member of a band called The Wiseguys Big Band Machine, a local favorite here in the East LA area. We are popular on the local circuits, which include Summer Concerts in many neighboring cities, and opening for the great Vikki Carr at two upcoming sold out shows. As a result of our popularity and longevity, we've had the honor of being asked to perform at several high-profile venues, including a national broadcast from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Christmas Day. The Wiseguys headlined at Disneyland and the Disney Resort, the House of Blues (both Anaheim and Sunset), the Whisky-a-Go-Go, the Derby, and festivals like Ink 'n Iron. The photo above was taken at Universal City Walk. Around this time I also played lead in a ToP/Chicago/Cold Blood rock band, and this mouthpiece was perfect for the gig! I played this mouthpiece on stage with Kenny Cetera, and opened for such acts as Poncho Sanchez, Bill Champlin, Cherry Poppin' Daddies and more. That mouthpiece sure got a work out. I originally had two of them made (one for backup, but I frequently switched off), and have now decided to keep just one, which is actually in my horn right now.
Condition is "USED". I did play this mouthpiece heavily for several years. Never been dropped that I can remember! Shipped with USPS First Class, and International shipping is available.
