Union Theological Seminary & Presbyterian School of Christian Education (Union-PSCE), located on the near north side of the city
of Richmond, Virginia, is a theological seminary of the Presbyterian Church (USA). With campuses in

North Carolina
, Union-PSCE prepares men and women to serve the church as pastors, educators, scholars, chaplains,
and missionaries.
Union Seminary was founded in 1812 as the theological department of Hampden-Sydney College, located near Farmville, Virginia,
and was relocated to Richmond, Virginia in 1898. The General Assembly’s Training School (ATS) for Lay Workers was founded
in
Richmond
in 1914 as a complementary institution intended to train “workers outside of the regular ordained ministry.”
ATS was renamed the Presbyterian
School
of
Christian Education
(PSCE) in 1959.
Union
and PSCE were joined in federation
in 1997. In 2002, an extension campus in
Charlotte
,
North Carolina
, was created on the campus of Queens University of Charlotte.
The
Charlotte
extension is known as Union-PSCE at
Charlotte
.
A May 2009 Times-Dispatch article indicated
that Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian
School
of
Christian Education
on
Brook Road
is changing its name to Union Presbyterian Seminary.
